Amazing April

As we approach the holidays we are so happy to celebrate our great learning!

Year 4

In year 4, we have been learning about the artists Henry Moore and Barbara Hepworth who were both interested in the ‘human form’.

Using clay, we sculpted our own human figures considering the interesting shapes sports professionals make when playing their sport. We used water to smooth our sculpture before then using clay tools to add small details and texture.

Just like Taibah the tiger, we have been trying new things and exploring our independence as artists through water colours. We each chose our own subject for our water colour art and had to give thought to the resources we would need as artists such as a paint pallet and a mixing pallet, along with a clean supply of water.

Year 3

This term, all of Year 3 have been working very hard practising and preparing for their Spring performances. Everything looked amazing, from the stage to the costumes to the singing and dancing! 3 Oak loved performing the song ‘Together’ on stage as a class and their dance moves stunned our audience as they were full of so much energy.  Here is a picture from the performance.

Year 3 went on a Geography trip to Redman’s road and Mile End Road to create a tally chart. They were looking very carefully to see what different modes of transport they could identify and how frequently they pass by in the space of 2 minutes.

Year 6

Year 6 Oak, in geography, have been learning about world climates and biomes. They learnt that Climate Zones are parts of the world with similar climates. Did you know, there are seven climate zones that are found across our planet?

They also learnt that Biomes are areas of the world with similar flora and fauna (plants and animals) living in similar habitats. For example, in the rainforest biome, we would find similar plants and animals that live in the rainforests around the world. Biomes can be split into two main groups: terrestrial biomes (on land) and aquatic biomes (in water). Because habitats are affected by climate, there is an overlap of climate zones and biomes on maps.

You can see this on the maps that the children have created.

Year 2

In year 2 we have been trying new things by experimenting with different types of printing in our art lessons which we have really enjoyed!

We made repeating patterns using our fingers to create our prints using different colour inks.

We have also been collaborative learners in maths lessons where we have been comparing the capacity of different containers.

We were excellent at using mathematical language to compare the containers, talking about ‘volume’ ‘capacity’ and saying which was ‘greater’ and ‘less’.

Reception

We have been having a wonderful time learning and exploring.  To find out all about real life baking we went to Rinkoffs Bakery - it was so interesting to see all the different things you can make with dough.  We used our senses to smell the wonderful baked goods.

We have been learning all about London.  We have constructed bridges, thought about different transport and explored through our books Maisy goes to London and The Naughty Bus.

Year 1

Year 1 has been buzzing with exciting learning over the past few weeks!

In R.E., we have been exploring different places of worship. After visiting both a mosque and a church, the children used their observations to identify and label key features of each. They were fascinated to discover not only the differences but also the many similarities between them!

In Science, our young explorers have been learning all about plants. We began by spotting different plants in our local area before sorting them by shape, size, and colour. The children also investigated how seeds travel—some float on water, while others are carried by the wind!

It’s been a fantastic few weeks of discovery, and we can’t wait to see what’s next!

Year 5

Year 5 Create Stunning Self-Portraits Inspired by Nature and Famous Artists

This term, Year 5 have been exploring identity and creativity through an exciting new art project — self-portraits inspired by the work of Kehinde Wiley and Tacita Dean.

Building on their last project, where they designed clay pottery biomes based on natural habitats, the children brought that same creativity into their portraits. They began by sketching outlines of their faces, paying close attention to proportion and detail. Using watercolours, they carefully painted their features, experimenting with blending and mixing colours to capture their unique skin tones and expressions.

For the backgrounds, pupils took inspiration from nature and the artistic styles of Wiley and Dean. They used “disappearing” and “reappearing” lines to create depth and movement, just like in their clay biomes, before adding soft washes of watercolour to complete the effect.

The final pieces will be full of colour, personality, and imagination. One student said, “I loved how we could include nature in our backgrounds again, like we did in our biomes.”
