Fabulous focus this term

Read about how we are developing our skills this term

Nursery

This week in nursery we have been learning all about bonfire night.

Are fireworks legal in London and in the UK? Firework Laws - Showtime Fireworks

We had a chance to learn the firework nursery song and have even been drawing our own fireworks! The children preferred to use chalk for their fireworks and chose to do a variety of different colours!  We used words as we created our patterns - "bang", "flash", "crash" "whoosh"!  The fireworks were a great way to learn about different colours too.

Year 5

During our sharing assembly, some children in our class shared some book recommendations to the year group. Diary of a Wimpy Kid and Dogman were both very popular series.  We love reading in Year 5, and we know how important it is to read every single day to develop our creativity!

We have also been practising how to read with expression during our reading lessons. First, we read a piece of text and mark where we should pause. Then we practice reading the text to our partners, making sure we use emphasis, tone and expression to show meaning. Then we had a go at performing the text to the class. This has been a great way to develop our reading skills as well as our presenting skills.

Year 6

In Year 6 this week we have been writing our own poetry, inspired by the poems of Benjamin Zephaniah. Our focus this week has been on the poem ‘Danny the Cat’ and we have worked on writing a poem of our own in the same style.

In the original poem, Benjamin Zephaniah uses repetition to show the repetitive nature of the life of a cat. In our writing in class, we aimed to use similar repetition based on an animal of our choice. We also aimed to be ambitious with our choice of verbs to build an accurate description of the animal.

Forest and Meadow

Forest and Meadow classes have enjoyed trying lots of new learning activities just like Taibah the tiger!

Children in Forest Class have been exploring making 5. Can you see the different ways we found to make 5 using the coloured counters?

Children in Meadow class have enjoyed sharing the story ‘Owl Babies’.  We made delicious chocolate nests for the owls. Yummy!

Both classes enjoy being curious like Corey. We love to explore what we can see, hear, smell and touch in the woodlands. We are learning to play together and always have fun learning together!
