Reception

In Reception we have been reading the Little Red hen and learning all about farm animals. On Wednesday 16th October we went to Stepney City Farm and got to see lots of different farm animals. We talked about the sounds each animal makes and described what they looked like. Once we got back to school the children had a go at drawing their own map of the farm and had a go at labelling their drawings using their phonics to support them. 

        

      

Year 1

In Year 1 Maple we have been trying new things like Taibah. We went on our first trip of Year 1 and we were ruby responsible when crossing roads and walking to Stepney Farm.

    

At the farm we planted seeds and learnt about where our food comes from. We saw lots of different farm animals and we showed kindness to them by being quiet and gentle. 

         

We have also been curious like Corey about the history of our school. We went on a walk around the school looking at parts of the buildings from the past. We learnt that boys and girls learnt separately and walked into different entrances. We learnt that the school used to be two different schools and that it has changed gradually over time. 

Year 2

2 Maple’s year has started off with a variety of ‘Trying new things’. After exploring our local area on foot one day, we became more aware of what human features we have around us. Then it was time for us to draw our own maps. We included roads, flats, our school, some shops and even the cinema, as we now know that cities like London have many cinemas. The key shows what colour each landmark needed to be in the map.

In English we have started to write fact files. Have a look at our amazing use of expanded noun phrases and conjunctions ‘because’ and ‘but’, as we introduce you to Scaly-wing dragons.

This term, Year 2 have been diving into the world of music with the help of Charanga’s “I Wanna Play In A Band.”  

   

The children have been learning to play along with the song, exploring rhythms and using these as a base to start their own improvisations. It’s been fantastic to see them grow in confidence as they experiment with creating their own musical ideas, building on the rhythms we’ve been practising in class. We’re excited to see how their skills develop as they continue to explore and express themselves through music!

Year 3

3 Maple have enjoyed their first trip of the year at Kew Gardens this week! It was the first time visiting Kew Gardens for many of the children - and a big surprise to see how long 24 stops on the District Line would take (50 minutes!)

We had a fantastic time learning about various continental plants in two glass houses, Palm House and Temple House, and have enjoyed learning about which plants grow in the summer and autumn seasons.

We tried many new things like using the official Kew Gardens autumn and summer tick sheet to help us find specific plants on our trip and we sketched some of the beautiful plants we saw yesterday by the lake! While we were there, we also worked hard to use the map of Kew Gardens to help us find each spot.

Year 4

In Year 4 we have been looking and classifying plants and animals. We went to Stepney Park to observe plants and figure out whether they are a fern, conifer, moss or a flowering plant.

We also went to the London Zoo to look at a range of vertebrates. Not only did we see camels, giraffes, tigers, lions and a baby gorilla … we also met England and Arsenal football player Declan Rice!  We spoke to him and even got to take a picture with him.  Thahlima was very, very happy as she is a huge football fan!  

              

Year 5

In Year 5, we went on an exciting trip to the British Museum.  We showed responsibility by taking the London Underground and navigating through London to reach our destination. Once there, we explored the huge museum. We spent time examining key eras of history from all around the world; from the Ancient Egyptians to the fascinating past of Islam. As we made our way through the Museum, we sketched our findings and made notes to help us with our learning. Part of our time at the Museum was spent investigating the Anglo Saxons, a period of time which we are learning about in school. Some of us got an opportunity to see the huge library at the centre of the Museum, which has just opened to the public.  We collaborated with the Museum staff to find out how historians use books to fact-check their research.

           

Year 6

In Science, Year 6 have been learning how scientists classify living things. They know the features of the different vertebrate groups and have made excellent branching databases to identify a wide range of vertebrates and invertebrates. Here are a couple of examples from 6 Maple.

In addition, Year 6 have been reading the book ‘Once’ by Morris Glitzman. 

It is the harrowing story of a Jewish boy who lived in Poland during the Second World War. We have used the book to develop our skill at descriptive narrative writing. Here are a couple of great examples from Rameesha and Kausar.
