Trip to the Houses of Parliament

The School Council went on a fantastic trip to the Houses of Parliament!

Firstly, the children went on a tour through Parliament, including going to the King’s robing room and the King’s staircase. Zayan learnt that, “The King only comes to the Houses of Parliament once a year, when it is the State Opening of Parliament.” The children really enjoyed going into the House of Lords and what Lords and Baronesses do. Sofia’s favourite part was: “We looked at where the King sits when he comes into the House of Lords. The chair is amazing and covered in gold leaf!” The children noticed that all the seats were made of red leather, which is the colour used for the House of Lords. We then went to the door of the House of Commons but we weren’t able to go in because it was in use. However, Yacub saw that, “There were lots of Members of Parliament going into the House of Commons.”

After the tour, the children had a workshop looking at how laws are made and how they are discussed in both the House of Lords and the House of Commons before they are given the Royal Assent by the King. Overall, the children had a brilliant time and learnt a lot about how democracy works.
